Richard Eckel Obituary

Richard "Dick" Eckel

Aug 28, 1939 - Nov 16, 2025

Berlin Heights, OH

Richard "Dick" Eckel, 86, of Berlin Heights, passed away Sunday, November 16, 2025, at his home surrounded by his family.

He was born August 28, 1939, in Bowling Green, to Howard and Marguarite (Dick) Eckel.

Richard graduated from Bowling Green High School and then received a bachelor of arts degree from St. Mary College in Kentucky. He went on to Xavier University in Cincinnati, and received his master degree in educational psychology. He was ordained as a priest in 1965 and served as Associate Pastor at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Sandusky, where he administered to the spiritual needs of members, counseled individuals and families and taught religion. His involvement in the community included founding a help service for inmates, establishing a 24-hour crisis phone service, and a Youth House Center, just to name a few. After he left the institution in 1972, he remained an integral part of "Serving God through serving His people" by serving on a myriad of task forces and boards to further drug and alcohol education and legislation. He co-authored a book along with 11 other priests titled "Why We Walked Away." He also served as a consultant for Citizens' Council on Domestic Violence. In 1981, he founded Sandusky Counseling Service and Life Enterprises, maintaining private counseling and spiritually related functions.

He owned and operated AmeriStar Water Bedrooms and Furniture from 1987 to 1994. He worked at Midwest Industries' distribution center in Willard from 1994 until he retired in 2011.

Continuing his calling as a minister, he performed weddings and baptisms up until 2022. He once said, "life is one spontaneous experience after another", which is demonstrated by his rich and storied life.

Richard is survived by his loving wife, Patricia (Guinn), whom he married in 1993. He is also survived by a daughter, Chelsey (Kyle) Meagrow; son, Zachary (Keli) Eckel; sisters, Sister Diana Lynn Eckel, Darlene Minnick, and Debbie Wilson; special friend and mother of his children, Brenda Bahnsen; grandchildren, Coltyn and Olivia Meagrow, Grant, and Carson and Miles Eckel; his beloved dog; Casey; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and other relatives.

In addition to his parents, Richard was preceded in death by his brothers, David and Daniel Eckel; a sister Dorothy in infancy; brothers-in-law, Bruce Wilson, Joe Minnick, Bill Allman and Jerry Stolle.

Visitation will be from 11 a.m.- noon Saturday, December 6, 2025, at St. John's UCC, 2712 Thomas Road, Milan, with a memorial service starting at noon, with the Rev. Wendy Schindler-Chasney presiding.

In lieu of flowers, those wishing to contribute to Richard's memory may do so to The Society for Protection of Animals, Inc., P.O. Box 1047, Fremont, Ohio 43420, or Second Harvest Food Bank or a local food bank of your choice.

Although we hadn´t seen each other in years, Dick remained an important part of my life. Many years ago, whenever I came home to be with my family during the holidays, he was always one of the first people I called. He ministered to many people and was truly a force for good. His kindness and presence made a difference to so many. I will always be grateful for the friendship and shared.

Father Eckel was a father/brother to me when I was lacking both in high school. He encouraged me to follow my path through literature, religion, music, poetry. He drove my opel car home from Cleveland after I drove us to a Moody Blues concert in the late 1960's. It was pouring down a drenching rain, suddenly, and I was a young driver trying to make sure we were safe. Fr. Eckel took the wheel for us and gave me back the keys when we got home. "and so, as the Miller told his tale, her face first white, turned a whiter shade of pale"--Procol Harum via The Moody Blues, Loveley to See You, My Friend!"

I met Fr. Eckel many, many years ago. He inspired folks just by his presence. He was committed to helping folks thru rough times. May his soul be at peace.

Fr Eckel was one in a million who was loved and respected by so many, young and old alike. Times spent with those of us, who were then students at St Mary´s in Sandusky, are memories never to be forgotten. Whether at mass, in the classroom, or just hanging out and sharing good times and laughs, he had such profound positive influences on many lives. He married my husband and I over 54 years ago and we still talk about what he said to us in those pre-marital classes and how grateful we were for his thoughts and blessings. May he be resting peacefully in God´s kingdom. Our deepest condolences to his family. John and Mary Ann Hotz

May God give Dick a share with God's People, as promised by the Risen Lord Jesus Christ. I not only have ancient memories from our time in seminary, but more recent memories of Dick attending Mass with his mother at St Aloysius Bowling Green. He always like to stir the pot, kept things interesting
May God bless all the Eckels and all Dick's family

I remember the days of Dick's ministry here in Sandusky. He did a lot of good and reached out to people in ways that others couldn't. An 'out of the box' thinker, for sure. And I believe many were blessed because of that. I'm grateful for all the good he did.

Father Eckel was well known in the 60' s and 70's. He attended may gatherings of young people during this Era as a priest, friend, adviser and all around person. When he left the parish he was followed by many people of may faiths. He was well liked and sought by many. He was a kind soul. My heart goes out to his family, children and friends. A very understanding man.
