Sandusky

Rev. Paul F. Stengel, 94, residing in Sandusky, passed away early Thursday morning, February 6, 2025, at Parkvue Healthcare Center after a brief illness.

Paul was born August 14, 1930, in Bellevue to the late Rev. George F. and Marie Sabina (Domrose) Stengel.

Paul graduated from Gibsonburg High School in 1948, then went on to graduate from Capital University in 1952, and Trinity Lutheran Seminary in 1956. He was a pastor at Trinity Lutheran Church in Moulton, St. John Lutheran Church in Grove City, Zion Lutheran Church in Loudonville, Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Warren, and Resurrection Lutheran Church in Sandusky. Paul was a member of Erie County Ministerial Association and Organizing Board of Care & Share and was a volunteer for many other community organizations, including Firelands Regional Medical Center. In his spare time, he enjoyed reading, traveling, but most of all spending time with his family.

Paul is survived by his wife, Phyllis Stengel, whom he married June 25, 1961. He is also survived by his daughter, Paula (Steve) Stellhorn; sons, Peter (April) Stengel and Philip (Donna) Stengel; son-in-law, Denny Stelzer; grandchildren, Ryan (Esther)Stellhorn, Lauren (Greg) Hiller, Katie Stellhorn, Emily (Andrew) Smith, Nathan (Elizabeth) Stelzer, Kevin (Audrey) Stelzer, Eric (Jess) Stelzer and Kelli Stengel; and 12 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews, and other relatives.

In addition to his parents, Paul is preceded in death by his daughter, Patty Stelzer; and his siblings, Ruth (Bob) Lundberg, Lois (Gerold) Acord, Dorothy (Ken) Myers and Eunice (Fred) Ahle.

Friends may call from 4-7 p.m. Monday, February 10, 2025, at Groff Funeral Homes & Crematory, 1607 E. Perkins Ave., Sandusky. Funeral Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, February 11, 2025, at The Chapel, 4444 Galloway Rd. Sandusky and Pastor Todd Nielsen will officiate. Burial will follow at Perkins Cemetery, Sandusky.

He was such a help and comfort to me during a very difficult time in my life. I remember his quiet strength and courageous stoicism. I loved his deep singing voice - now he´s rejoicing in that great heavenly choir!
