Richard Butler Obituary

Richard "Tom" T. Butler Jr.

Mar 4, 1952 - Mar 21, 2026

Milan

Richard Thomas "Tom" Butler Jr., 74, of Milan, passed away peacefully Saturday, March 21, 2026.

He was born in Sandusky, March 4, 1952, to two bright thinkers, Ann T. Butler and Richard T. Butler, Sr. Tom was voraciously curious, intensely compassionate, poignantly funny, and deeply inspired by those who remained kind in challenging circumstances.

From the time he was a small child, Tom saw it as his duty to be of benefit to everyone he met. He sought out opportunities to help others and often participated in community action events and supported social programs. He would frequently engage in conversations that encouraged growth of a richer perspective, and could tell the best stories.

He was a dependable, loyal husband, patient and supportive father, and humorous and enriching grandfather. He will be deeply missed in those in-between moments that make up so much of our lives.

He is survived by his three children, Justin, Brendan and Elisa; his seven grandchildren; his brother; and many adoring cousins, nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Renita R. H. Butler.

He did not wish to have a funeral service. For those who would still like to honor him, we can all make an effort to lead with our kindness when engaging with others. We can be present and engaging with our loved ones who are still with us. We can commit to doing the little things that leave the world better than we found it and to always keep learning.

Memorial contribu-tions can be made to ACLU, at action.aclu.org, moveon.org, or International Rescue Committee at rescue.org.
