Maxine (Spencer) McGee, 79, residing in Sandusky, passed away unexpectedly Monday morning, Jan. 8, 2024, at home.

Maxine was born Oct. 26, 1944, in Starkville, Mississippi, to Jack Hollingshed and Ella Belle (Spencer) Hollingshed.

Maxine worked for Providence Hospital in the dietary department and then was employed at Firelands Regional Medical Center in housekeeping where she retired after 45 years of service. In retirement, she continued to work for Progressive Cleaning. Maxine was a member of Porter's Memorial Church. She enjoyed bowling, shopping, traveling, gardening, helping others, and was an avid Pittsburgh Steelers fan. Her greatest joy was her family especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Maxine is survived by her sons, Eckford James (Sam McGee) (Tonya M.) Spencer of Naperville, Illinois, and Rick (Nicola) McGee of Sandusky; 15 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; sisters, Nancy Keys of Sandusky, Gloria and Anna Hollingshed of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and Veronica Riley of Starkville; brothers, Joe Edward of Memphis, Tennessee, and Stanford Hollingshed of West Point, Mississippi; and numerous nieces, nephews, and other relatives. Maxine had lots of friends and loved ones, but her special friends are Willie Jean Twymon, Jewel Henson, Dorieen Everett, Helen Prophet, and Alice Alyce Aaron.

She was preceded in death by her parents; five brothers, LeFlore, William, Roy, Clifton, and McLester (Peter); three sisters, Betty Ray, Ella Mae, and Alvin (Jenny); and grandchild, Samuel Gary Spencer.

Visitation for friends will be 10 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 17, 2024, until the time of Maxine's funeral at 12 p.m. at Groff Funeral Homes & Crematory, 1607 E. Perkins Ave., Sandusky. Pastor Clayton Howard will officiate. Repast is following the funeral at Ebenezer Baptist Church, 1215 Pierce St., Sandusky, Ohio, 44870.

Additional services will be 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 20, 2024, at New Zion United Methodist Church, 5060 S. Montgomery Street, Starkville, Mississippi, with the Rev. Tyrone Stallings officiating. West Memorial Funeral Home, 103 Jefferson Street, Starkville, Mississippi, will be handling arrangements for the family. Interment will follow at New Prospect Cemetery in Starkville, MS.

The family would like to express our appreciation for the many acts of kindness each of you have shown during our hour of sorrow including your prayers, thoughts, phone calls, cards, food, and visits. This has been a source of strength to us and we desire your continued prayers. May God richly bless each of you! - The McGee and Spencer families.
