Fred Walter Obituary

Fred Milo Walter

May 30, 1937 - Aug 10, 2025

Norwalk

Fred Milo Walter, also known as "Fritz" in his early years, was born Sunday, May 30, 1937, and passed away peacefully Sunday, August 10, 2025, at home.

He grew up in Northeast Ohio, where he met and married Bernice "Bunny" Pfouts, high school sweetheart and the love of his life for 70 years. He proudly served three years in the United States Army that included a one-year deployment to Korea. After he completed his military service, he attended The Ohio State University and received both his Bachelor of Arts and Master of Education degrees.

After college, he began a 54-year career in Ohio education that positively influenced thousands of students, teachers, staff, and parents across the state. His teaching and administrative experiences led to a move to Norwalk in 1984 as the Superintendent of Norwalk City Schools. He maintained this position until 1994. He continued to serve in Ohio education and had multiple interim administrative positions to assist Ohio school districts prior to accepting a position for the state of Ohio Department of Education until his retirement in 2015.

Fred was preceded in death by his parents; brother; and two sisters.

He is survived by his wife, Bernice J. Walter (Pfouts); daughter, Elizabeth E. Boudreau; son, Mark M. Walter; Mark's wife, Catherine E. Walter (Sell), and their two children, son, Christopher M. Walter, and his wife, Beverly E. Walter (Maxson), and their daughter (Fred's great-granddaughter) Alice E. Walter; and daughter, Sarah E. Walter.

A gathering for remembrance will take place at a future date.
