Edgar Pickard Obituary

Edgar C. Pickard

Aug 7, 1935 - Mar 2, 2023

Port Clinton

It is with heartfelt sadness that we announce the passing of Edgar "Ed" Clark Pickard, 87, who died peacefully Thursday, March 2, 2023, surrounded by loving family and friends at his home.

Ed was born Aug. 7, 1935, in Silver Lake, to Dr. E.C. and Blanche Wolfe Pickard.

During World War II, Ed traveled to many memorable locations with his mother and father, a Lt. Colonel in U.S. Army medical corps. They spent time in Florida, Mississippi, and California. When the time came, Ed served with honor and distinction in U.S. Air Force, beginning 1955. He was stationed in Cheyenne Wyoming, Louisiana, Long Island, New York, and Wiesbaden, Germany, and was honorably discharged in 1961.

Ed loved boating and spent many summers cruising Lake Erie with Kathy, his wife of 46 years. He loved nothing more than being out on the water and feeling the sun on his face and wind in his hair. Ed and Kathy belong to Bay Point Yacht club where he served as commodore in 1985. He loved to travel and took multiple trips to the Bahamas to scuba dive and cruise the Caribbean.

Ed retired from Xerox in 1986 after a very successful career and began his second career managing their three mobile home parks and being the go-to for anyone needing general home maintenance in the village of Silver Lake. His charm, sense of humor, and charisma were well-known throughout the community.

Ed finally hung up his tool belt, moving from Silver Lake to a home on the shores of Sandusky Bay where he and Kathy could watch together an endless stream of sunsets, storms rolling in off the lake, and the changing of the seasons.

When he wasn't on the water or below it, Ed was an avid reader and especially enjoyed reading books on history and World War II. Furthering his interest in the military and boating, Ed volunteered at Liberty Aviation Museum in Port Clinton, working for many years to help restore PT 728, a World War II PT boat. When the restoration was complete, as a reward for his many years of volunteering, he was honored with the privilege of being captain of the boat on its inaugural cruise on Lake Erie.

Ed will be deeply missed by all who knew him. Family and friends will remember him for his quick wit, infectious laughter, and unwavering love and support. Ed was a man who lived life on his own terms and his larger-than-life personality and his passion for life will be remembered by all. Rest in peace, Ed.

Ed is survived by his loving wife of 46 years, Kathy; daughter, Jacquie (Roger) Graham of Lansing, Michigan; son, Jim (Leslie) Pickard of Silver Lake; grandchildren, Hillary Pickard-Gacom (Andrew Gacom) of Arlington, Virginia, Evan Pickard (Kayla Schroyer) of Monroe Falls, and Jennifer Fletcher; great-grandson, Caiden Fletcher of Lansing, Michigan; nieces and nephews, Chris (Gretchen) Bueter of Marblehead, Tim Bueter of Maumee, and Wendy (John) Plenzler of Marblehead; great-nephew, Austin (Ty) Plenzler of Centerville; and Lake Erie son, John Pickle of Toledo.

Ed was preceded in death by his parents, Dr. E.C. and Blanche Pickard; sister, Barbara Pickard; and paternal and material grandparents.

Visitation will be 1 p.m. Saturday, April 1, 2023, until the time of Ed's memorial service at 3 p.m. at Toft Funeral Home & Crematory, 2001 Columbus Ave., Sandusky Ohio, 44870.

A celebration of Ed's life will be announced at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Bay Point Yacht Club Capital Improvement Fund, P/C Glenna Plotts, 7326 State Road 19, Unit 2312, Mount Gilead Ohio, 43338, Liberty Aviation Museum PT 728 restoration project, 3515 E. I´ve known Ed 31 years, my husband longer. We were dock neighbors at Baypoint Yacht Club in Marblehead, and we enjoyed many family gatherings when not on the water. He and Kathy are family to us and our children. Ed was first class and soft under the gruff. Never weak. I am a better human being for knowing him and experiencing his love and advice. I am going to miss him so much. Love you, Eddie. See you on the other side. We´ll keep watch over Kathy.
