Anita L. (Hanko) Guiher, 75, of Wakeman, passed away Thursday, Sept. 29, 2022, at Stein Hospice Care Center, Sandusky, after a long battle with cancer.

Anita was born March 29, 1947, in Lorain. She was the daughter of Louis L. and Anna M. (Balint) Hanko. She was a 1965 graduate of Firelands High School and attended Ohio State University and Lorain Community College. In 1970, Anita was hired by Federal Aviation Agency as a trainee to become an Air Traffic Controller. She was one of the few early women to become an air traffic controller and spent the next 27 years working at Cleveland Air Traffic Control Center in Oberlin.

Anita is survived by her husband, Norman E. Guiher. Anita and Norm married in 1979 and for 28 years, they raised and showed Clydesdale draft horses on their farm in Berlin Heights. In 2013, Anita and Norm built their retirement home overseeing the Vermillion River near Wakeman on land Anita's parents bought in 1954.

Anita is also survived by her stepdaughters, Mitzy (Angus) Taggart of San Diego, California, and Kelli (Ross) Fleischmann of Naperville, Illinois; stepson, Norman M. (Gayle) Guiher of Dublin, Ohio; stepgrandchildren, Aidan, Roen, and Finn Taggart, Hank Fleischmann, and Gavin and Gunnar Guiher; brother, Gerald (Jan) Hanko; sister-in-law, Kathleen Hanko; nephews, Bob (Susan) Hanko, Mike (Cheryl) Hanko, and Bill (Jocelyn) Hanko; nieces, Amy Hanko and Kate (Shane) Siefert; and several great-nieces and great-nephews.

Anita was preceded in death by her parents; and brothers, Louis and Norman Hanko.

Calling hours for family and friends will be 1 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 5, 2022, until a Anita's celebration of life at 3 p.m. at Morman Funeral Home, 16 Cooper St., Wakeman. Burial will follow at Cable Road Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorial contributions be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 262 Danny Thomas Pl., Memphis, Tennessee, 38105, or Stein Hospice Service, 1200 Sycamore Line, Sandusky, Ohio, 44870.
