Ruth Humm Neuman, 89, of Northbrook, Illinois, passed away Thursday, Aug. 3, 2023. She was with her daughter at the time she passed.

She was born March 6, 1934, in Cleveland, and grew up on a farm in Berlin Heights, where she helped her parents and younger siblings grow and harvest peaches, grapes, and apples.

She attended Northwestern University and Miami University in Ohio, graduating with a degree in Education. She was a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma Sorority. While at Miami University, she met and married the love of her life, John Neuman.

Ruth worked as a teacher for a few years and then committed herself to homemaking. She enjoyed traveling, visiting museums, garden walks, and doting on her husband and grandsons. Travels included exploring the National Parks, Europe, the Caribbean, Canada, Central America, Japan, China, and Thailand. The importance of family was evidenced by attendance at every family wedding and reunion.

Ruth is survived by her only child, Betsie Neuman (Kevin) Onsrud of Northbrook, Illinois; sister, Elizabeth Humm (Geof) Workinger of Edina, Minnesota; brother, William Humm (Barbara Wauchope) of Lee, New Hampshire; two grandsons, Geoffrey John Onsrud (Mackenzie Toll) of Sandusky and Jeremy John Onsrud of Chicago, Illinois; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Florence (nee Henry) and Karl Humm; and husband, John Alan Neuman.

The family would like to thank the staff of Brandel Care Center, Covenant Living of Northbrook, and Residential Hospice for the care and compassion they showed Ruth in her final days.

Private interment will take place this fall in Berlin Heights.
