Joseph James Riley, beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend
Joseph, 68, passed away peacefully surrounded by loved ones.
Son of Alvin J. Riley and Margaret (Landoll) Riley, he was a man of great strength, quiet wisdom, and unwavering love for his family. Joe was President of A.J. Riley Inc. in Norwalk, a 75 year old local family business he ran alongside his brothers. He was a graduate of St. Paul's Catholic High School in Norwalk and EHOVE Career Center in Sandusky. Joe was also a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in New London. He leaves behind a legacy rooted in hard work and an unmatched knack for fixing just about anything.
Born April 18, 1957, Joe grew up with a strong work ethic and a heart full of generosity. He built a life around his family and a good day's work. He worked in construction, where he took pride in every weld, equipment fix and every layer of black top laid smooth-working with his hands and creating things that would stand the test of time.
At home, he found peace in his shop and his garden. There was joy and love in every batch of horseradish and sauerkraut that he made. Most of the time, TV lulled him right to sleep-but he could usually stay awake for a good Clint Eastwood or John Wayne movie. Any day was made perfect when it ended with a ride on his motorcycle, dinner on the grill and cold beer.
He was a loving father and grandfather, always ready with a warm hug, ride on the excavator or a snack to share. He taught his children and grandchildren how to work hard and live simply. His legacy is not just in what he built, but in who he raised and how he loved.
Joe is survived by his loving wife of 45 years, Denise; his children, Brad (Amy), Brian (Megan), Tara (Richard) Starr, and Luke (Riley); his seven cherished grandchildren, Bria, Rohan, Logan, Finn, Charlee, Gannon, and Quinn; his two brothers Jack and Charlie (Suzanna) and three sisters Cathy (Mike), Geri, Elaine, several nieces and nephews and his beloved dog, Diesel. He was preceded in death by his loving parents.
Family and friends are invited to a Vigil (Wake)from 2-4 p.m and 6- 8 p.m. Thursday, May 29, 2025, at Eastman Funeral Home, 200 West Main Street, New London, Ohio 44851. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Friday, May 30, 2025, at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, 18 Park Avenue, New London, Ohio, followed by interment at Clarksfield Cemetery - in memory of a man who made things grow, who made things work, and who made life better for those lucky enough to know him.
Memorial contributions may be directed to the family in care of Eastman Funeral Home, 200 W. Main St. New London, OH 44851, for a memorial scholarship in Joe's honor for a graduating senior, who wishes to continue their education in the trades; or to the church, Our Lady of Lourdes.
The family would also like to thank ProMedica Toledo Hospital in Toledo and staff that took such wonderful care of him.
He will be deeply missed, always remembered, and forever loved.
