Peru

Joanne D. Smith, 93, of Peru, died Saturday, January 25, 2025, at her home surrounded by her loving family. She was born March 24, 1931, in Norwalk and graduated from North Fairfield High School in 1949.

Joanne worked in the business office at Fisher-Titus Medical Center for over twenty years until her retirement. Prior to that, she raised her seven children in Peru and worked at various jobs, including baking wedding cakes.

She was an avid reader and enjoyed horseback riding in her early years. She enjoyed cooking and baking Sunday night dinners for her children and grandchildren. A tradition many of her children have carried on with their families.

She was a member of St. Alphonsus Catholic Church, where she sang in the church choir and was a member of the ladies group. She had a strong devotion to St. John Neumann and gave many St. John Neumann medals to those in need of prayer and healing.

She is survived by her children, Howard (Jan) Smith of Norwalk, Susan Hedrick of Monroeville, Robert J. (Carol) Smith of Pickerington, Kimberly (Brian) Lucal of New London, Russell (Joan) Smith of Lakeside, Rebecca (Donald) Sitterly of Peru, and John (Krista) Smith of Peru; her grandchildren, Tracy (Matt) Nichols, Julie (Chris) Castle, Nick (Megan) Smith, Scott (Lynsey) Smith, Tom (Jane) Hedrick, Rob (Emily) Smith, Adam (Nicole) Smith, Renee (Adam) Sigman, Shanna (Mike) Mansfield, Chad (Teresa) Lucal, Kristin Lucal, Dena Smith, Andrea (Dereck) Evans, Mitch (Lisa) Smith, Ashley Sitterly, Angela (Brandon) Park, Dereck (Sara) Sitterly, Amanda Swords, Olivia (Ben) Ringenberg, and Victoria (Brandon) Sparks, 41 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren; her brother and sisters-in-law, Kenneth Smith of Willard, Rosemary Grine of Norwalk, Dorothy Pifher of Cincinnati, Irene (Dale "Butch") Braden of Norwalk, Donald Smith of New Haven, and Raymond (Tish) Smith of Sandusky; numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert L. Smith, in 2011; her parents, Ernest and Delee (Parratt) Disbro; her sister, Barbara (Dick) Keefer; and her son-in-law, Thomas Hedrick Sr.

Friends may call from 3-7 p.m. Tuesday, January 28, 2025, at Pfeil Funeral Home, Monroeville Chapel, 109 Monroe Street, Monroeville. A funeral Mass will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, January 29, 2025, at St. Alphonsus Catholic Church, Settlement Road, Norwalk, with the Rev. Ronald A. Schock officiating. Burial will follow at St. Alphonsus Cemetery.

Joanne was the first person to train me at Fisher Titus as a cashier. We had so much fun and laughed everyday! She was a loving, caring person. She will be missed. May God comfort you all in this difficult time.
