Clayton Joseph Matus, 87, of Rochester, passed away Tuesday, March 21, 2023, with his daughters by his side at Louis Stokes VA Medical Center in Hospice.

Clayton was born May 22, 1936, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, the son of the late Joseph Matuszewski and Esther (Matuszewski) Davidson and moved to Rochester when he was 16. He attended New London High School before joining U.S. Air Force in.

Clayton owned his own rig, hauling steel for 25 years. Then, he worked for Lesco as a plant manager for 20 years and also owned Clay's Welding in Wellington. Clayton loved his dogs, Nitro and Hunter, and had a love for cars and all things fast. He designed and manufactured many specialty vehicles reaching over 100 mph at the drag strip. He also enjoyed attending car shows. He also worked for a time in the DARE program.

Clayton is survived by his daughters, Karen (James) Maiers of Sheffield Lake and Darla (Ronald) Gow of Wellington; grandchildren, Brittany, Tristan (Henna), and Taylor (Joe); great-grandchildren, Gabriel and Ezra; half-sister, Mary (Pat) Timman; brother-in-law, Donald McClave; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 53 years, Ruth (McClave) Matus; newborn son, Larry; in-laws, Eugene and Bessie (Poole) McClave; and brother-in-law, Charles McClave.

Visitation will be 4-7 p.m. Friday, March 24, 2023, and 10-11 a.m. Saturday, March 25, 2023, at Norton-Eastman Funeral Home, 370 South Main, Wellington, with services at 11 a.m. Saturday. Burial will take place at Grove Street Cemetery, New London, at a later date. A luncheon will follow services at Pittsfield Community Church, 17026 State Route 58, Wellington.
