Agnes Braley Heckelman, 94, passed away peacefully in her home Wednesday morning, November 5, 2025.
She was born March 27, 1931, in Rhodes, Iowa, to the late Vernie and Florence (Failor) Schultz.
She attended Iowa State University after graduating from Humboldt High School in 1948. She met Loren W. Heckelman in Ashland, Ohio, and they married June 23, 1956. Upon Loren's retirement from the US Air Force, they moved to the family farm in Milan Township in early 1968. She was a longtime member and supporter of Milan American Legion Post 527, Norwalk VFW Post 2743, Milan Garden Club, Firelands Herb Club, Milan Rotary Club, and Vacationland Sam's Camping Club Chapter No. 23.
Known as Braley to her family and the community, she is survived by her four children, Loren (Elena) Heckelman, Rex (Maricela) Heckelman, Curtis (Karen) Heckelman, and Lucy (Joe) Joiner, along with nine grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. She is also survived by cousins Harlan (Joyce) Schultz of Iowa and MaryLou Stauffer of Milan, as well as nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Loren W. Heckelman; her sisters, Diane, Lucy, and Judith; and one grandson, Andrew Heckelman.
Her life had a deep and profound influence on her four children and countless other family members and friends. She is gone from our sight but shall never leave our hearts and minds.
The family will arrange private memorial services at a later date. Groff Funeral Homes & Crematory is assisting with arrangements.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in her memory to Edison Birthplace Association Inc., 9 N. Edison Drive, Milan, OH 44846 or to St. John's United Church of Christ, 2712 Mason Road W, Milan, OH 44846.
