Shirley A. (Morgenstern) Matter, 89, of Clyde, died peacefully Mother's Day, Sunday, May 14, 2023, in Champaign, Illinois, with her family at her side.

She was born Jan. 31, 1934, in Clyde, to Mildred (Roberts) and Ernest Morgenstern who preceded her in death. Shirley was a 1951 graduate of Clyde High School where she was active in business administration classes along with being a cheerleader.

She went steady with the love of her life, Chelcer Matter, during high school, after graduation and through his service in U.S. Army (1953-55) during the Korean War. They married May 1, 1955, at Clyde First United Methodist Church. They celebrated their 66th anniversary in May, 2021, and Chelcer passed shortly after on June 26.

Along with being a loving wife and mother, Shirley worked at Pearce Insurance in Clyde for close to 40 years. She was also a long-time active member of The First United Methodist Church, volunteering many hours as part of the kitchen club for the last 30 years. She enjoyed reading books, playing cards, and spending time with friends.

She is survived by three daughters, Chris (Brent) Anderson of Champaign, Illinois, Pat (Bob) Jaffie of Ocala, Florida, and Kathy (Larry) Peterson of Omaha, Nebraska; nine grandchildren, Jason Kohlenberg, Kristi (Brad) McDuffie, Phillip Kohlenberg, Eric (Lisa) Kohlenberg, Rachel Jaffie, David (Stephanie) Jaffie, Nicholas Gilreath, Nolan Gilreath, and Maggie Peterson; and six great-grandchildren, Alex, Riley, Alyssa, Braedan, Kaelan, and Zaylee.

Visitation will be 9 a.m. Saturday, June 3, 2023, until the time of Shirley's service at 11 a.m. at Clyde First United Methodist Church. A luncheon will immediately follow the service.
