Sandusky
Michael John Brooks, 79, ascended to his heavenly home Thursday, January 16, 2025, to be with his Lord and Savior. Mike was born July 5, 1945, in Sandusky. His parents were Theron and Ruby (Shoop) Brooks. The family resided in Castalia, where Mike graduated from Margaretta High School in 1964.
Having a free yet restless spirit, Mike served in the US Navy from June 1964 to August 1968, first on the USS Ranger and then on the USS Constellation. He was awarded the Navy Unit Commendation Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal with one bronze star, and the Vietnam Campaign Medal with Device. After the Navy, Mike returned to Sandusky. However, his wandering nature led him to many different states, where he held an array of jobs and built a library of knowledge and experience.
Mike retired to Sandusky where he was known to hang out and enjoy his coffee at Country Kitchen and Jolly Donut. His faith in Jesus Christ led him to the Christian Singles Fellowship, where he met many lifelong friends, including Karson Slisher, Bill and Heidi Busdicker, Jodi Damron, and Russ and Kim Brennan. The family is especially grateful for his friendship with Jan Collins.
Mike was a one-of-a-kind character, even a Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde at times. He was extremely intelligent with a genius-level IQ and creatively gifted with a knack for drawing, writing, and creating music, sometimes knocking out a mind-blowing melody on a keyboard without ever having had a lesson. Later in life, he learned that his underlying medical conditions greatly impacted who he was and how he related to people.
Mike was preceded in death by his father, Theron Brooks; his mother, Ruby (Shoop) Brooks; and his brother, Joel D. Brooks.
He is survived by his niece, Tami Brooks; and nephews, Kirt D. Brooks, Joel L. Brooks, and Shane D. Brooks.
The family wishes to thank Erie County Veterans Services for conducting the service at Oakland Cemetery where he was laid to rest.
