Huron lost another classic Wednesday, June 18, 2025, when Michael David Bork, Dapper to his friends, passed away peacefully, surrounded by family at his lifelong home on Center Street. Mike had just turned 77 years old and was only days shy of celebrating his 51st wedding anniversary.

Born June 7, 1948, in Toledo, Mike was the beloved eldest son of Murland Bork and Rosemary Bick. He was one of eight siblings, Marysue, Jim, Kathy, Judy, Joey, Tom, and Annie. Growing up in a big, boisterous family gave Mike his deep appreciation for connection, loyalty, and good storytelling-traits that followed him throughout his life.

After earning his degree from The Ohio State University, Mike proudly served in the Army Reserve during the Vietnam War. He was stationed in Alaska and carried the distinction of being the last man drafted from Erie County. After his service was completed, Mike was the last man hired onto the New York Central Railroad. He continued in the footsteps of previous generations of Bork men for another 42 years before retiring.

It was at Cedar Point where he met the love of his life, Karen A. Austin, a recent transplant from California. The two married June 22, 1974, beginning a half-century love story full of family, friendship, and adventure. Together, they raised four children-Josh, Kim, Erin, and Lauren-and built a warm, welcoming home that became the heart of countless gatherings.

A proud family man, Mike found joy in the simple outdoor pleasures: fishing and boating, camping, golfing, tending his garden, and unwinding with classic rock or jazz music. He loved drive-in movies, Indians' games with his kids and grandsons, and especially spending time on the water. A longtime member of the Huron Yacht Club, Mike was most at peace, captaining a boat full of kids-whether headed to Sheldon's Marsh for a cookout or catching the sunset over the North side of Kelleys Island with a Corona in hand. He was happiest when the boat was full, and the music was good.

He is survived by his beautiful wife Karen; his four children, Josh (Beth, Wife), Kim (Tim, Husband), Erin, and Lauren; and his cherished grandchildren, Dylan and Sage (children of Erin), and Junah and Orion (children of Josh & Beth). His presence in their lives was steady, loving, and unforgettable.

To know Mike was to be welcomed in, offered a beer, a seat, a story, a laugh, and likely fresh strawberries from his garden. His legacy of love, humor, and generosity will carry on through his family and the many friends he touched along the way.

He will be greatly missed and always remembered.
