John Raymond "Jack" Nichols, 86, of Millfield, passed away Thursday, Aug. 3, 2023, at The Laurels of Athens.
He was born June 7, 1937, in Detroit, Michigan, the son of Marjorie (Canfield) and Lester Nichols. He married Ruth Arlene (Carey) Nichols on Oct. 9, 1955, and she survives. Jack was a 1955 graduate of Townsend-Wakeman High School in Huron County. He worked as a bricklayer and construction superintendent, VP of Operations at Riverside Hospital in Toledo, and VP of Operations at Citrus Memorial Hospital in Florida. Jack was a two-year veteran of Wakeman Police Department as a volunteer officer, 27-year veteran of Huron County Sheriffs Dept. where he served as a Special Deputy, concluding his career as a Captain. He served four years as a board member for Western Reserve Schools in Huron County. Jack also was an avid baseball and softball player, golfer, bowler, and pilot.
Jack is survived by his wife of 67 years, Ruth; their dog, Misty; sons, John (Sarah) Nichols of Millfield, Tom (Mary Tillman) Nichols of Toledo, and Terry (Amy) Nichols of Georgetown, Kentucky; grandchildren, Melissa (Craig) Bostater, Melinda Nichols, Travis (Nikki) Nichols, Monica (Mark Patton) Humphrey, Charles Humphrey III, Kyle Nichols, Nicole (Ricci) Magsino, Derek (Ashley) Nichols, Max Nichols, Megan Nichols, and Bryan (Mary) Nichols; 22 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; special cousin, Cheryl (John) Nolan; and many in-laws, aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and friends from all over the country.
Jack was preceded in death by his mother, Marjorie in 1974; father, Lester in 1992; and brother, Ronnie in 2002.
Jack's funeral will be 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 12, 2023, at Souers-Cardaras Funeral Home, 46 Fayette St., Nelsonville. Visitation for friends and family will be 1-2 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.
To keep with Jack's giving nature, the family is asking that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to Alzheimer's Association or American Heart Association.

My husband and I met Jack and Ruth in Brooksville Florida. The neighbors on Woodside Street would get together for impromptu parties and exchange stories. Lots of laughs.
