John E. Mench, 85, of Norwalk, died Saturday, Aug. 13, 2022, surrounded by his family under the care of Stein Hospice. John was born July 30, 1937, in Norwalk, to the late Waldo E. and Alwilda M. (nee Shipman) Mench. He grew up in Monroeville and graduated from Monroeville High School, class of 1955. He graduated from Oberlin College in 1959 with a Bachelor of Arts degree, and received a master's degree in history and social studies from University of Michigan. Prior to starting the New London High School Resource Center in 1969, John taught English at New London and EHOVE and also worked as the librarian at Monroeville High School and EHOVE. John retired from New London High School in 1996.

John was a member of education associations at the local, state, and national level. He also was the advisor for several activities at New London High School.

He enjoyed crossword puzzles, reading, classic movies, and traveling. His favorite destinations included the western United States, Williamsburg, Virginia, and Tennessee. His most cherished time was spent with his family.

John married Carolyn A. (Schaffer) Mench on Dec. 27, 1967, and she preceded him in death in 2020. He is survived by children, Jonathan (Lynn) Mench of Springfield, Tennessee, and Laura (Edward) D'Amato, of Berea; seven grandchildren, Ryan Mench, Jonathan "Tyler" (Haleigh) Mench, Lauren Mench (Jeff Obelcz), Kyle (Destiny) Mench, Johnathen Atkins, Matisen Atkins, and Jonathan D'Amato; four great-grandchildren, Harper, Walker, Everly, and Raylan Mench; sister-in-law, Noreen Mench; and nephews, Mark and Matthew Mench. He was also preceded in death by his parents; and brother, James L. Mench.

A memorial gathering for John and Carolyn will be 2-4 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 24, 2022, at Hunter's Glen Condo Clubhouse, 29 Falcon Crest, Norwalk. Memorial contributions may be made to Stein Hospice.
