Jeanette Smith Obituary

Jeanette L. Smith

Jan 13, 1932 - Jan 26, 2024

Castalia

Jeanette Louise Smith of Castalia passed away surrounded by loved ones Friday, Jan. 26, 2024, after a beautiful life of 92 years.

Jeanette was born Jan. 13, 1932, in Venice, Ohio, to John and Della (Bluhm) Offenburg. After graduating from Sandusky High School in 1949, Jeanette served as a homemaker and school cook and retired from Margaretta Local Schools in 1995 after 25 years.

Jeanette married Bill Smith on Nov. 27, 1950, on a Monday, because on Saturday when the wedding was scheduled, they had the worst snowstorm in 50 years. They were married 64 years before Bill's passing March 9, 2015. Jeanette and Bill were blessed with three sons, Jeff (Jean Wagenknecht) Smith, Gary (Sheri Summers) Smith, and Marty (Sally Lehrer) Smith, with Jean, Sheri, and Sally becoming part of the family through marriage. Then came grandchildren, Tiffany, Drew, Abbi, Ashlee, Jacob, Alex, and Tyler, and great-grandchildren, Gage, Ava, Tate, Zeke, and Elliot. Through the years, much time was spent with joy at games, practices, meets, programs, and matches for her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

Jeanette was preceded in death by her parents; eight sisters, Mabel Smith, Alice Gast, Della Ruh, Doretta Knauer, Lois Kaman, Inez Laessle, Carol Leibacher, and Verna Vinton); brothers and sister-in-laws; and husband.

She is survived by three sons; grandchildren; great-grandchildren; and many family members.

Jeanette was baptized at Trinity Lutheran Church and confirmed at Zion Lutheran Church in Sandusky. She walked faithfully in God's grace throughout her Christian life at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Vickery and Grace Lutheran Church in Castalia. Jeanette's greatest blessings were her faith, family, and friends. The best advice given to her was from her mother, "You should love one another."

Visitation will be 3 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 28, 2024, until the the service to celebrate Jeanette's life at 4 p.m. at Ransom Funeral & Cremation Service, 610 S. Washington St. Castalia, Ohio, 44824. Pastor Mike Shelley will officiate. Private burial will be Monday, Jan. 30, 2024, at Castalia Cemetery.

Memorial contributions can be made to Project Share of Margaretta Township, 4108 SR 269, Castalia, Ohio, 44824, or Grace's Table Food Pantry, 203 S. Washington, Castalia, Ohio, 44824.

It's with a sad heart that I write this. Jeanette was a precious soul. She always had a kind word and a smile to give out to others. She was so much to me growing up, a cook at school, a family friend, and a fellow Christian. My sympathy to her family for their loss, my praise for heaven who has received a wonderful new presence.
