Amy Scott-Douglass Obituary

Amy Scott-Douglass

Sep 10, 1970 - Oct 8, 2024

Huron

Amy Scott-Douglass, PhD, 54, of Huron, passed away Tuesday, Oct. 8, 2024, after a struggle with cancer. Amy, the youngest child of Gordon and Norma Schaechterle, was a devoted teacher, scholar, mother to several pugs, and beloved friend and mentor to many students and friends.

Amy leaves behind hundreds of students, scholars, and readers who were touched by her brilliance and light. Author of Shakespeare Inside: The Bard Behind Bars, she devoted her life to bring ideas and art to the brightest possible audience, elevating the empathy and intellect of all she touched. An award-winning teacher, she was currently an associate professor of English at Lorain County Community College. Previously she served as faculty to California State University Fullerton, Denison University, Georgetown University, and Marymount University, where she directed the Graduate Program in English and the Humanities. A true Renaissance woman, she loved Shakespeare, travel, friendship, and theater, as well as home renovation, design, and dogs. She was passionate about exposing students to early modern literature and drama, and taught a wide variety of literature and humanities courses ranging from 17th century women authors to graphic novels on film. Her research interests centered on early modern literature and adaptation, covering topics ranging from children's editions of Shakespeare to colorblind casting in contemporary television adaptations of Shakespeare. A natural teacher and explorer, she would patiently explain to friends how to conduct basic home repairs and impressing professional contractors with her knowledge of home renovation and historic preservation.

Amy is survived by her mother and three siblings and is preceded in death by her father, her sister, and her beloved pugs, Hector and Hamlet. She leaves behind a host of grieving nieces and nephews, friends, current and former students, and two pug dog children, Sissy and Hero.

A celebration of Amy's life will be for close family at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, her family and friends request that donations be made to Shakespeare Behind Bars at https://shakespearebehindbars.org/donate/ or Huron County Humane Society, 246 Woodlawn Ave., Norwalk, Ohio, 44857 in Amy's honor.

Amy was my best friend at Denison. I had no idea she had passed since we had fallen out of touch over the last few years. I am so sorry to hear this news-devastated really.

The loss of another IBC sister is always sad. Amy worked so hard to get the right protocols for her diagnosis. She wrote beautifully and did extensive research into her particular type of breast cancer. She will be missed, may she rest in peace.

I am heartbroken to learn of Amy's passing and am infuriated by how difficult everything always was to navigate with her diagnoses in the medical system. I am grateful to all of you in her online networks--I know you all helped so much over the course of her journey. If anyone has any news or information about Hero and Sissy I'd love to hear about where they are and if we can support their new caregivers. When I saw her last in December, she was making plans for them. I send condolences to all of Amy's friends and family. I know we are all glad she is no longer in pain and will remember her light always.

Amy was a valued, passionate Cancer support group member who helped others with her sharing, research and experience(s). Despite her own less than favorable trail of Physicians who often learned more from her and the IBC cancer we all share(d), she never gave up! Her spirit was beautiful, giving and one of a true warrior which rightfully earned her the group nickname " Xena"! You will be missed Amy, I did not know you authored a book but look forward to purchasing it and keeping it as a testiment to the light you truly were to ALL you encountered...Fly High sweet sister....so happy you are finally pain-free xxoo - Laura R.

Amy and I became friends via our cancer support group. She and I spent time texting and calling to talk. Sometimes it was dark and sad. Other times full of hope and joy. She was an inspiration about fighting and pursuing answers and results. We leaned on each other a couple of times when things were difficult for each of us. I will miss her so very much.

Amy was a bright light in our IBC group on Facebook and we all followed her journey. I am praying for her family, friends and Sissy and Hero, that everyone can find some comfort in this heartbreaking time.
