Allen L. Simmons, 76, of New London, passed away peacefully Wednesday, May 15, 2024.

He was born March 14, 1948, in Battle Creek, Michigan, the son of Leon Simmons and Priscilla (Cary) Matthews. Allen graduated from Maple Valley High School in Nashville, Michigan.

A member of U.S. Air Force for 10 years, Allen served during the Vietnam era. He later was employed by Federal Aviation Administration and University of Alaska, Anchorage. Allen met his future wife, Ellen Kirkpatrick, in a gas station on the Alaska-Canadian Highway in British Columbia while both were on the way to Alaska, and they married two years later. They celebrated 50 years of marriage June 23, 2023.

The outdoors was important to Allen and he enjoyed fishing, trap shooting, and gardening. He also loved animals, especially his dogs.

Allen is survived by his wife, Ellen (Kirkpatrick) Simmons; siblings, Greg Simmons of San Bernardino, California, and Pricilla Uhen of Grand Rapids, Michigan; brother-in-law, Roger and Jeanne Kirkpatrick of Jackson, Wyoming; and many nieces, nephews, stepnieces, and stepnephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Jeanie; and beloved stepfather, Elmer Matthews.

Private family services will be at a later date.
