Alfred L. Oney, 88, of Greenwich, died Sunday, June 4, 2023, at his farm surround by his family.
He was born Aug. 9, 1934, in northern Richland County on his grandfather's farm. Alfred grew up in the Greenwich area and graduated from high school in 1952. He was member of U.S. Naval Air Reserves from 1952-1958.
Alfred worked as a civilian with U.S. Air Force for over 21 years in Shelby, Mobile, Alabama, and Dayton. Following that, Alfred worked as a food inspector for USDA from 1973-1995. In total, he had 43 years in civil service, farmed for many years, and retired at age 75.
He was a member of Greenwich United Methodist Church. Alfred was also a member of Masonic Lodge for over 60 years, becoming a 32nd degree and earning the Knight York Cross of Honor. Most recently, Alfred was a member of Roby Lodge #534 in Monroeville.
Alfred's survivors include five children, Steve (Sherri) Oney of Huron, Laura Sweeting of Norwalk, Cheryl (Dan) Mehl of Boyne City, Michigan, Robyn (Patrick) Bovia of Shelby, and Dawn Oney of Greenwich; 12 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; siblings, Gordon Oney of North Fairfield, Gerald (Connie) Oney of Greenwich, and Raymond Oney of Greenwich; sisters-in-law, Shirley Oney of Wickenburg, Arizona, and Mary Oney of New London; and many nieces and nephews.
Alfred was preceded in death by his wife, Corinne Oney in 2017; daughter, Carol Flint in 2000; parents, Fred and Wanda Oney; brothers, Larry Oney, Mitchell Oney, and infant brother, Ronald Oney; and sister-in-law, Katherine Oney.
Visitation for family and friends will be 5-8 p.m. Wednesday, June 7, 2023, with a Masonic Service at 4 p.m. at Greenwich United Methodist Church, 18 E. Main Street. Additional visitation will be 12 p.m. Thursday, June 8, 2023, until the time of Alfred's service at 1 p.m. Burial will follow at Greenwich Greenlawn Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Alfred can be sent to Greenwich United Methodist Church, 18 E. Main Street, Greenwich, Ohio, 44837.
The staff of Eastman Funeral Home, 49 W. Main Street, Greenwich, assisted family with arrangements.
