Alan Myers Obituary

Alan Myers

Jun 8, 1938 - Aug 21, 2025

Norwalk

Alan Myers, 87, of Norwalk, passed away Thursday, August 21, 2025, at Mount Carmel St. Ann's Hospital in Westerville.

Born June 8, 1938, in Norwalk, he was the son of Joseph and Alice (Brown) Myers. Alan graduated from St. Paul High School in 1956, where he excelled as a four-year letterman in basketball, baseball, and football. He set several records, including career rushing yards and the longest punt return-records that stood for decades. In recognition of his athletic achievements, he was inducted into St. Paul Athletic Hall of Fame in 2016.

Alan earned a football scholarship to Xavier University and played for three years until an injury ended his college career. In 1961, he graduated with a degree in psychology and then joined the Marine Corps. He attended Officer Candidate School at Quantico, Virginia, and was commissioned as a 2nd lieutenant. In 1962, he was sent to Okinawa with the 3rd Marine Division for specialized training before deployment to Da Nang, Vietnam. He was promoted to lieutenant and assigned as Motor Transport Advisor, providing advisory support to the South Vietnamese Army (ARVN). After completing two tours in Vietnam, he was honorably discharged with the rank of captain.

Alan returned to Vietnam in 1968 as a civilian, working for the military's PX in Saigon. There, he met his future wife, Chanh, and they married in 1971. The couple returned to Norwalk and welcomed their first child, Bryan, in 1974. As Saigon fell in the spring of 1975, Alan coordinated with family and military contacts to help his wife's mother and five siblings escape to the United States. With the support of family and friends, he and his wife helped their extended family settle into life in the US.

Alan worked as a loan officer for many years at Home Savings & Loan. After the S&L crisis in 1989, he opened an Allstate Insurance Agency in downtown Norwalk, where he remained until retiring in 2010.

Known for his love of sports and charismatic personality, Alan was a prankster and a talented storyteller. Friends and family appreciated his easygoing nature, his roaring laugh, and his childlike enthusiasm for anything fun. His most meaningful achievements were sharing his talents on the football field and saving the lives of his in-laws' family members.

Alan is survived by his sons, Bryan (Cindy) and their children, Riley, Brady, and Luke of Delaware, Ohio; and Jeff of Powell, Ohio; his brother, Michael (Fran) of Norwalk; brothers-in-law, Ron Jaworski (Rita) of Norwalk and Liem Nguyen of Anna, Texas; sisters-in-law, Phung Mantooth (Don) of Van Buren, Arizona, Kay McHale (Jim) of Richardson, Texas, Lee Giacalone (John) of Evergreen, Colorado, and Ha Nguyen (Reid Jacquith) of Powell, Ohio; nephews, Steve Jaworski (Marybeth), Scott Jaworski (Rhonda), Kevin Jaworski (Mary), Scott Myers (Katie), Greg Myers, and Ryan Myers, all of Norwalk, Tag Giacalone of Los Angeles, California, Michael Giacalone of Chicago, Illinois, Zachary McHale of Richardson, Texas; nieces, Patty (Jaworski) Taylor of Jackson Hole, Wyoming, Monica Nickoli (Scott) of Norwalk, and Julie Myers McCord (Mike) of Columbus, Ohio; as well as many great-nephews and great-nieces.

Alan was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Chanh (2018); his sister, Marilyn Jaworski; his brother and sister-in-law, Denny and Veronica Myers; and his mother-in-law, Xuan Nguyen.
